Drainage Techniques For Your Home

There are a variety of different drainage techniques that you can implement when performing residential waterproofing. Each technique has its own merits, and it is up to you to decide which technique will best suit your property. Below, we've compiled a list of a few different residential water draining options for homeowners seeking to protect their homes from intrusive water.

Landscaping- Landscaping is an often overlooked way to prevent water from infiltrating and damaging your home. Something as simple as grading your lawn so that it slopes down and away from the foundations of the house can go a long way. This allows water to naturally flow away from your home. Another important preventative landscaping technique is to eliminate low or flat spots on your property, which can cause issues with standing water. Learn more about landscaping tips here.

Dry Well Systems- Drywell systems are placed below ground, and are in areas where run-off water flows in to be dispersed over a wide area. The Dry Well is a container filled with gravel and coated by porous filter fabric. When run-off flows into the Dry Well, the gravel and filter fabric cause it to fan out and disperse in a wide area as opposed to sitting in one place.

Gutters and Downspouts- Gutters and downspouts are a must-have for any residential home. Gutters catch rainwater that runs off the roof of your home, where it then flows into a downspout, exiting the downspout in an area that won't negatively impact your home. Gutters and downspouts are essential water draining appliances.

Foundation Drains- Foundation drains are a great drainage option for your home or other property. The method of drainage is similar to Dry Well systems. Perforated pipes are buried in a bed of gravel that surrounds the foundation of your home. When water hits the pipes, the perforation and gravel causes the water to disperse into a larger area as opposed to simply gathering and sitting around the foundation of the structure.

French Drains- The last item on our list is the French Drain. French Drains operate in the same way as foundation drains, with gravel and perforated pipes, but French Drains can be installed anywhere on the property. They are not restricted to surrounding the foundation of the structure.

Any of the above techniques are a great way to prevent water from accumulating on your property and damaging your home. When it comes to water drainage, consult an expert to help you decide which techniques will work the best for your property. All of these techniques are tried and true, and being proactive about water drainage will save you money on foundation repairs in the future.
